Trauma does not always
look the way you expect

Many of our Lombard clients do not think of themselves as "trauma survivors." They just know something happened, and life has not felt the same since. Our therapists meet you exactly where you are.

Not sure whether what you're dealing with is trauma or specifically PTSD? Read more about the difference and how each is treated, or just reach out and we'll help you figure it out together.

  • Flashbacks and intrusive memories

Unwanted images, sounds, or physical sensations that pull you back into the past without warning.

  • Hypervigilance and constant alertness

Always scanning for danger, unable to relax, startled easily. Your nervous system stuck in threat mode.

  • Avoidance

Steering clear of people, places, or situations that remind you of what happened, often shrinking your world over time.

  • Emotional numbness or disconnection

Feeling detached from yourself, others, or your own emotions. Going through the motions without really being present.

  • Shame and self-blame

A persistent sense that what happened was your fault, or that something is fundamentally wrong with you because of it.

  • Sleep problems and nightmares

Difficulty falling or staying asleep, disturbing dreams, waking exhausted no matter how many hours you rest.

Trauma therapy approaches
that go beyond talking about it

Our therapists use evidence-based modalities specifically designed for trauma and PTSD. Talk therapy alone is often not enough. These approaches work at the level where trauma is actually stored.

Narrative Therapy

Our therapists use narrative approaches to help you separate your identity from the trauma, rewrite the story you carry about yourself, and reclaim the authorship of your own life.

Trauma-Focused CBT

A structured, evidence-based approach that addresses the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors trauma creates, particularly effective for children, adolescents, and adults with PTSD.

Somatic & Body-Based Approaches

Trauma lives in the body, not just the mind. Our therapists incorporate body-awareness techniques to help regulate the nervous system and release the physical holding patterns trauma creates.

Family & Child Trauma Therapy

When a child experiences trauma, the family needs support too. Our therapists work with children and parents together, restoring safety and attachment within the family system.

Telehealth Sessions

Our trauma therapists offer secure video sessions for all Illinois residents. For clients with PTSD, attending from a safe and familiar environment is sometimes an important part of the healing process.

How PTSD shows up at different ages,
and what helps

Megan Bomicino, LCPC, Dayrise’s Director of Operations, works from a somatic standpoint. She explains what she sees in teens, young adults, and adults.

In teens and young adults

PTSD can look like nightmares, avoiding reminders, irritability, trouble concentrating at school, and feeling constantly on guard. Older teens and young adults may take risks such as using substances, turn defiant with parents or teachers, or lose motivation. Symptoms can start right after the event or months later. Behavior can reflect trauma, but it does not always.

In adults

Adults often keep meeting their responsibilities and look high functioning while they carry trauma privately. It can show up as trouble at work, conflict in relationships, avoiding intimacy, isolation, repeated illness, and sleep or appetite changes. Some feel detached, as if they are living day to day without feeling it.

What keeps it going

Earlier trauma, repeated or severe events, chronic pain, financial stress, ongoing abuse, and limited support all make PTSD harder to shake. So do beliefs like "it was my fault" or "nowhere is safe," avoidance, shame, and poor sleep. When danger is ongoing, practical safety support comes first.

Common misconceptions

PTSD is not only for people in war. It can follow assaults, serious accidents, and any event where your safety was threatened. Needing help does not mean you are weak. Numbness does not mean you are safe, and feeling on edge does not always mean danger. Trauma therapy does not erase a memory. It reduces the distress the memory causes.

Skills first, then EMDR

EMDR can be very effective, and it brings painful memories to the surface. Before it starts, clients need a basic level of distress tolerance (a DBT skill) plus grounding and body awareness, so they can stay present instead of sliding into panic or a flashback. We build those skills first.

The body is part of treatment

Somatic work pays attention to what happens in the body: a racing heart, muscle tension in the neck and shoulders, nausea, numbness. Grounding, noticing the chair or floor, gentle movement, and slow breathing help regulate the body, and a calmer body can calm the thoughts that follow. New or worrying physical symptoms still need a medical evaluation.

When to get urgent help

Seek an urgent assessment if you or someone you care about has suicidal thoughts, self-harm, thoughts of harming another person, or a sharp decline in the ability to function. Other warning signs include severe dissociation that creates a safety risk, escalating substance use, being unable to meet basic needs, and ongoing violence, abuse, or exploitation. In an emergency, call or text 988, or call 911.

Questions about trauma and PTSD
therapy in Lombard

Finding the right trauma therapist is one of the most important decisions you will make in the healing process. At Dayrise, our Care Coordinator talks with you first, understands your history and what feels safe, and hand-matches you with the therapist whose training and style fit your specific situation. Call (331) 425-8625 or book a free consultation online.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is one of the most extensively researched treatments for PTSD and trauma. It works by helping your brain reprocess traumatic memories through guided bilateral stimulation, typically eye movements, so the memories lose their emotional intensity. EMDR is endorsed by the World Health Organization and the American Psychological Association for PTSD treatment. Kailyn Donovan, LCSW, our EMDR-certified therapist in Lombard, offers it alongside other evidence-based approaches based on your specific needs.
No. Many people who benefit from trauma therapy do not have a formal PTSD diagnosis. If you experienced something overwhelming, frightening, or deeply painful, and it is still affecting your daily life, your relationships, or your sense of self, trauma therapy can help. A diagnosis is not required to begin.
In most cases, yes. Our therapists are in-network with BlueCross BlueShield PPO, United Healthcare PPO, and Aetna PPO. EMDR is covered by most major insurance plans when provided by a licensed therapist. Our Care Coordinator verifies your specific benefits before your first session. Call (331) 425-8625 or reach out online.
It depends on the type and complexity of the trauma, your history, and the approach used. Some clients experience meaningful shifts in a focused course of EMDR over a few months. Others with complex or developmental trauma benefit from longer-term work. Your therapist will set clear goals with you from the start and revisit the plan regularly so you always know where you are in the process.
Yes. Our therapists work with children and adolescents who have experienced trauma, using Trauma-Focused CBT and other age-appropriate, evidence-based approaches. Parent involvement is an essential part of child trauma treatment at Dayrise. We work with the whole family system, not just the child.
Standard talk therapy can be helpful for many issues, but trauma often requires specialized approaches that address how it is stored in the nervous system and body, not just the mind. Our trauma-trained therapists use modalities like narrative therapy, somatic awareness techniques, and Trauma-Focused CBT, and EMDR is available through our EMDR-certified therapist in Lombard. These approaches are specifically designed to process traumatic memory, regulate the nervous system, and rebuild a stable sense of self.
Individual therapy is our primary offering, and it is often the most effective starting point for PTSD. If group support is something that interests you, our Care Coordinator can discuss current availability and point you toward appropriate community resources in Lombard and the surrounding area. Call (331) 425-8625 to find out what is available.
Our therapists are trained in trauma-specific modalities like narrative therapy and Trauma-Focused CBT, not just general counseling. They work within our TEAMSβ„’ model, which means trauma treatment at Dayrise addresses the full impact on daily functioning, relationships, and lifestyle, not just the symptom picture. And our Care Coordinator stays involved throughout to ensure the match is right and the plan is working.
No. PTSD can follow sexual violence, serious accidents, assaults, and other events involving actual or threatened death or serious injury. The event does not have to be life or death. Feeling that your safety was threatened can be enough, and a clinician can assess for it.
The core symptoms overlap. Teens and young adults often show irritability, trouble concentrating at school, withdrawal, defiance, low motivation, or risk-taking such as substance use. Adults often show trouble at work, conflict in relationships, avoiding intimacy, isolation, and physical symptoms such as repeated illness or sleep changes, often while still meeting their responsibilities.
No. Treatment aims to reduce the distress and disruption the memory causes, so you have more choice, connection, and participation in life. Your body is doing what it evolved to do to keep you safe, and therapy helps it learn that the danger has passed.
Yes, to a point. EMDR brings painful memories to the surface, so clients need a basic level of distress tolerance and grounding skills first. Your therapist will help you build those skills so you can stay present during the work.
Seek an urgent assessment for suicidal thoughts, self-harm, thoughts of harming another person, severe dissociation that creates a safety risk, escalating substance use, or ongoing violence or abuse. In an emergency, call or text 988, or call 911.
